Johan Guthmiller, Mr., son of John Guthmiller, Sr. received these letters  in 1927 and 1929.  As far as John Jr. knows,  these are the last letters and no one has heard from then after 1929.

Dear freinds Johann and Rosina.

This is to let you know that we have received our letter with great joy and read that you are all in good health, which is the most important thing in this world.  I also read that you had a poor harvest over there, but it is good that you had some corn.  But the girls should be all right, they have saved their money.  But they did send their father one dollar when he was in need.

They probably thought that they have the kind of father who can work, then he will have bread.  But that is not how it is here.  If you don't believe my letter you can ask Pastor Herming.  Now I want to let you know that we are having a very hard winter.  However, we have enough fodder and fire-wood.  After the thunderstorm the sun will come out again! I had some wine and sold some of it and brough bread with the money for a little reserve, for they say "burned child avoids the fire".  Price for a bushel of grain is 1 Ruble, but clothing is very expensive, a par of trousers cost i Ruble an 50 Kopeck.

How close are you to Father Joseph?  He too is getting old, he is 74 years old.  Your mother is older, she is 76.  Here many die of heart attacks.  A young woman died recently, in the early morning she was up baking bread and then she was doing laundry.  She collapsed at the wash-tub, fell down and was dead.  Many have died like that.  That is why it is necessary to be watchful, one does not know when the Lord comes.  There is not one hour during which one is safe from death.  Dear Johann and Rosina,  I cold write so very much, but it is not allowed.  If only I could talk to you for a hour.  Dear Johann, if you can, please send me the....[ illegible word)... if it not too expensive.  But don't do it if it is too expensive,  it is not that urgent.

Now I will close my letter, with thousands of greetings and kisses. I greet you all from the bottom of my heart with the kisses of love, as well as your children and your siblings, especially Ludwig's wife.  She is a widow now and she sent me some money.  I thank her, and you, too.  Everything depends on one's will.
