[Author unknown.  Story found in the Tappen, ND Jubilee Book]

Christian and Rosina (Hoffer) Kemmet and four boys, John 7, Jacob 5, Christian 3 and Frederick 1, left Glueckstal / Russia in September 1905.  When they came they brought the Boughmen homestead 16 miles south of Tappen in Grant (Peace) Township.  The house and barn were built as one unit out of clay mud blocks.  There was also a well on the homested.  The first winter they used straw to heat the house.

There was a fireplace fixed there out of flat rocks.  After the straw was burned the rocks were heated, a grate was put on and the bread was baked.  They also had a range but used this method in the winter time.

In 1909 the first school was held in the Kemmet home.  The John Albrecht, Christ Oster, Chris Roessler, Fred Dutt and George Blacgmer [sic; poss. Blackmer]] children attended.  The school teacher was Bob Dodds.  He is still living and resides in Jamestown.  In 1911, the Kemmets purchased the Rodenbough farm 15 miles south of Dawson.  Three more brothers, Christopher, George and Ted, and, a sister, Rose, joined the family.  Their first car was purchased in 1915 and was an Overland.  A tractor called the Red Devil was purchased in 1916, made by the Had Power Company.  This proved to be a folly as it was built to light to withstand any work.  Mr. Kemmet took pride in the threshing machine he owned along with Emanuel Schauer and Chris Neumiller.

Around 1917, the reformed church was moved near the former Glueckstal church site.  Earlier church was held in the school  Early members of the church were Fred Hoffers, George Roemmichs, Christian Kemmets, Ed Riekers, Michael Roemmicks, Christian Schmierers, John Hoffer and Jacob Grafs.

The Kemmets were the parents of eight children:  John of Steele; Jacob , Tappen; Christian, Fred and George, Dawson; Christopher, Hazel and Ted of Truckee, Calif.  Their daughter Rose resides in Clarksburg, Calif. . Mr. Kemmet was born on Dec. 23, 1874 and died suddenly August 10, 1930 at the age of 56.  After the death of Mr. Kemmet, Rosina married Fred Wolf of Fredonia.  She resided there until Dec. 6, 1938 when she was a fatal victim in a car accident.

Early Threshing Days

by

John, Jake and Fred Kemmet

[Also found in the 1980 Dawson Centennial Book]

27 Nov. 1922

Mr. Kemmet couldn't get anyone to thresh his crops.  So one day his oldest son, John, who lived at Bowdon, ND came and told his father that there was a threshing machine for sale at Bowdon.  Mr. Kemmet went to Bowdon to buy the machine.  It was a Case Steamer engine.  John ran the engine with the separator, and Fred had the water wagon.  They bought the machine from Alex and Bill Morrison, but the deal was they had to thresh the Morrison flax first.  The first night they slept at the Alex Morrison home, moving a few miles th4 next day.  Fred and John slept that night under the steamer engine, on top of which was Wagon Wheel Hill.  They didn't sleep much as it was cold.  The third night they slept at the Frank Whitman home.  When they got up the next morning it was 20 below zero.  The fourth day they got as far as the Sam Swanson place, where they spent the night. That evening their Dad was with them, as he brought some lignite coal, hauled with his Model T car. One the fifth day they arrived in Dawson and spent the night at Spitzer Home.  In the morning they left Dawson and.  A few miles south of town (then called the Sam DeVore Lake- now, across Highway 3 from the Irene Sprague farm) the engine started a prairie fire.  There was no snow at the time. With the help of Mr. Kemmet and his three sons they got the fire out and made it to the Clara Dodds farm, where Fred spent the night with his horses.  Mr. Kemmet, John and Jake went home to sleep. The following day they got the outfit home.  They couldn't get soft coal so they burned straw and lignite and thrashed their crop.  They began moving to Jake's place, the Chris Oster farm, now owned by the BIll Hoffers, to thrash his crop.  About halfway there a bad blizzard came up so the threshing machine set for about three weeks, until the weather got better.  They pulled the steamer engine through the snow the rest of the way with 16 horses.  After arriving at Jake's they returned to get the separator with eight horses.  All the horses belonged to Mr. Kemmet and his sons, John and Jacob. They got Jacob's crop threshed the week before New Years.
