Evelyn Cammeron's Old Photographs
Mrs. Cameron died 26 Dec 1928 and had been taking photographs in Montana since 1894. Donna M. Lucey created a beautiful book on her life's work called PHOTOGRAPHING MONTANA 1894-1928, The Life and Work of Evelyn Cammeron, First Edition 1990. This was the first time I was aware who Mrs. Cameron was and that she was more than a roving photographer. She was married to an early rancher Ewen Cameron. On their honeymoon they had arrived from Great Breton in 1889. He had grown up in the sixteenth-century casle built by "Black Duncan". She had been a part of the British social scene created by her father, a rich merchant who dealt with the East India. She had lunched with the Shah of Persia, had Princess Louisse, dau. of Queen Victoria, in her home.... They loved Montana they remained...perhpas with dreams of getting rich ... They imported Arabian stock.... to the Eve Ranch. After a period of time, they failed in their hope to raise stock that could be transported back to England.... To help make money she started to take photographs.... Because of her impluse to chronicle her surroundings, the descendents of Hein family, like myself, would never have such a marvelous source to view through her photography. She not only photographed families and individuals, she gave us photographs of the land with it's animals, birds, plants and the mood of all those moments in time as the glass slides collected an image.
Thank you Donna for finding this history for us and placing some of it in your marvelous book.
Many of her photographs are found in the MARSH, MONTANA, REMEMBER THE YESTERYEARS 1910-1997, MARSH, MONTANA HISTORY BOOK COMMITTEE; Frieda Neumiller, Ed Gaub, Mary Haughian and Editor, R. H. (Bob) Scherger, First Edition.
