In Scotland, the "Black Houses" and Coffers' Houses were of stone with thatched roofs with one room. On one end was the barn and the opposite end was where a family lived. There wasn't a chimney but an open hole in the roof where the smoke escaped. No widows. Very dark inside.

The Irish thatched homes reminded me of the photographs of the homes I've seen in books on thatched houses in Russia. There were small widows and it wasn't so dark inside.
