The architects were F. Gonsiorovksy, A. Bernardacci and Yu. Dmitrenko.
The foundation stone was laid on the 16th of Sept. 1884.
The cost was 1.3 million gold rubles.
[in 1966-7 restoration occured and the government allocated four
milion rubles, 9 kgs of 24 carat gold.]
It seats 1,633 people in it's four horseshoe shaped tiers overhead
is the copula decorated with scenes from Shakespeare's: Hamlet, Twelfth Night,
A Winter's Tale and A Midsummer Night's Dream painted by Loeffler, a Viennese
artist.
The stucco moulding, gilt friezes, sculptures in the niches and
the red velvet seats give it a special look which was created during the
Romanov reign.
Composers who conducted within these walls were:
Anton Rubenstein
Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov
Edward Napravnik
Although Pyotr Tchaikovsky did not conduct here, he was present
during the premier of his opera The Queen of Spades in 1893.
Famous Russian singers, actresses and actors, ballerinas
and musicians performed here over the last one hundred
years.
