Homemade Laundry Soap

Mix 4 or five cups of borax with ten cups of water and nine cups of melted lard or 4 cups of clarified cooking grease or tallow.   Put 8 oz. of lye in the ten cups of water and stir with a wooden spoon.   Mix in a crock or graniteware pan.  Never use aluminum kettle when making soap.   Once lye is dissolved,  slowly add the borax and the melted fat.   Keep stirring until thick and heavy.  Pour into box lined with wax paper and cool slowly.
