ST[A]EHR FAMILY LIST & RESEARCH
|
THE STEHR FAMILY has been a very difficult family to trace for
a variety of reasons. Even though more and more data is being
available to us who are researching families who lived in Old Russia,
little has been added to our original data given to us verbally.
Therefore, I am in the process of gathering all families of Stehr, Stoehr,
Stohr, Stahr, Staehr, Staer, Stier and others in hopes to find something
that will help our research.
Originally, it was thought our Stehr family belonged to Count Staer de Buhel et Staer de Starenburg, del de Schaunberg et Waernberg because as late as 1950 we had cousins who still lived in Waernberg, Germany. This, however, may prove to have been misleading. Presently, the family believes they may have been from Luetzelsachsen / Mannheim , Baden-Wu.. See Map #2. I have no information about the Stoehr family who lived in or near Mannheim accept a few names and dates as seen below. The description of my great grandmother Christina, nee Stehr, Hein b. 1845/1846 in Beresina / Bessarabia, S. Russia is interesting. She had long blonde hair which her personal servant braided and spiraled on top of her head. Her very large clothes closet held more than 56 dresses created for her in Germany during a visit with relatives. Each dress held matching shoes and other items to complete each outfit for the season and weather. Her character was said to have been kind and generous, however, she was fully capable of dealing with her husbands business and money for she was left in charge when her husband traveled for personal or business from Borodino. It is known that she was in complete charge of the family vineyards because all the money earned from this business was her spending money. Several family stories have given us items upon which she had purchased with her "wine money". In her china closet she had collected complete services of twelve to be given to her one daughter and each daughter-in-law.... The only one who was unable to collect her china was my grandfather's, Ludwig Hein's, wife, Christina, nee Schweikert Hein, because they had migrated to the USA and hoped to return to visit and collected the china and other items. WW I prevented my grandparents from returning. Another items Christina bought was new bedroom furniture in a new bedroom addition of their home in Borodino. The headboard was part of the story I remembered because my great grandmother Christina had designed the coat-of-arms, rampart lion, which belonged to the Hein family, and, three innitals "W.G. W.", which is part of another family coat-of-arms which refers to the words "What God Wills", were carved in the wood in splendid fashion style. It is not known what religion Christina, nee Stehr, Hein was before her marriage. More is known about her mother's, Margaretha, nee Roedel, Stehr's religious background than Christina's. It is known that her mother had been part of a group who had believed the Second Coming of Christ which they had believed would occur in 1817 on Mt. Ararat. It is known Christina attended the Lutheran church in Borodino (after it was built) each Sunday because the number of dresses she had made in Germany which allowed her to wear a different outfit each Sunday during a year. Christine was born in Beresina which was a Lutheran village. That said, we know that Ludwig (my grandfather and her son) was not Lutheran until he was baptized just before his marriage to my grandmother, Christina. What is known about her father Christian Stehr? The only story I recall was: He was strong enough to bend a train rail which he did on a bet while a railroad track was being built in Bessarabia. Margaretha's husband was unhappy while living in Beresina / Beses., so they migrated to Dobruscha, an area near the mouth of the Danube, [Rumania] in hopes to find others with their same beliefs in their religion and daily living. |
