Mecklenburg-Guestrow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin & Mecklenburg-Strelitz
1812
1866 to 1934
History:
Mecklenburg-Guestrow was a state in the Holy Roman Empire that ended up in a partition after the death of Henry IV, Duke of Meclenburg in 1477 His lands would be inherited by his two sons. When the elder brother, Albert died without issue in 1483 his lands were inherited by his younger brother Magnus I, Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin. Deaths, religion and the lack of legetimatte heirs created controvers until 1556 when John Albert I, Elector of Brandenburg was given Schwein while Ulrich was given the title of Duke of Mecklenburg-Gustrow. Ulrich died without heirs and in 1603 the lands and title was inherited by Adolf Frederick I and John Albert II, as joint rulers of Mecklenburg-Schwerin in 1610. The death of Duke Gustav Adolph without heir caused, once, again, dispute of inheritance caused controversary. This time it was betweeen Frederick William, Duke of Mecklenburg and Adolphus Frederick II....
This carries us to the creation of Mecklenurg-Strelitz in 1701 after five years of dispute. Under the Treaaty of Hamburg. Adolphus Frederick gained the lands that would be called Principality of Ratzeburg He would have the title of Duke as would Frederick William, who would be known as the Duke of Mecklenburg-Strelitz. From 1701 to 1815 the two Houses of Mecklenburg ruled.
In 1815 the Congress of Vienna Mecklenburg-Schwerin and MecklenburgStrelitz granted the two dukes with the rank of Grand Duke withthe personal attachtment of "Royal Higness". Both countries became Grand Duchies. There was the House of Mecklenburg-Schwerin and House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz..
To this day, there House fo Mecklenburg-Schwerin and the head of the family continues to hold the title of "Duke of Mecklenburg" even though the morarchy was abolished in 1918 after WWI and their name is, now, considered common: "Herzog zu Mecklenburg". Holding the title is . Borwin, Duke of Mecklenburg since 26 Jan. 1996. Royality does not carry a last name (surname) HIs given names are Georg Borwin Friedrich Franz Karl Stephan Konrad Hubertus Maria.
And excellent starting point for those searching your Mecklenburg ancestry is found at the following web site called "Understanding Your Ancestors" by Leslie Albrecht Huber at http://www.understandingyourancestors.com/as/mecklenburg.aspx

Swedish Pomerania: History: The Swedes held dominion under the Swedish Crown from the 1600s to 1815 a strip of land along the German Baltic coast known as "Swedish Pommern" and parts of Lower Pomerania, parts of Silesia and parts of Prussia. After the Polish War and the Thirty Years' War in 1648 under the Treaty of Westphalia, Sweden was given Upper Pomerania (Vorpommrn) with the islands of Ruegen, Usedom and Wollin. By 1679 the Swedish troops had been pushed away from the areas east of the Oder River. In the Treaty of Stockhom in 1720 most of the areas were ceded to Brandenburg-Prussia. The area known as Swediwh Pomerania in 1814 was ceded to Denmark in exchanage for Norsway in the Treaty of Kiel. The Congress of Vienna in 1815 transfterred the area to Prussia in exhcnage for Lauenburg which Prussia ceded to Denmark. So, the the area known as "Swedish Pomerania" was incoportaed into the "New Upper Pomeranina" (Neuvorpommern) and into what was to be called Province of Pomerania. See section on Mecklenburg where there is a map showing Swedish Pomerania in 1812.

Wustrow, Mecklenberg There are two Wusstrow places. One if a commune in Mecklenburg-Strelitz, which is southeast of Neustreitz, southwest of Mirow, North of Strechin. and the others is a comune in Nordvorpommern, which is north northeast of Rostock out on a sliver of land on the coast of the Baltic Sea. I suspect it's in Mecklenburg-Strelitz. See the map on the route the Germans used on their trek to Riga then southward by the Dnjepr River S. Russia to Odessa then on to Bessarabia (Bess.).
